OUR Prison Island tour offers more than what others do.
Our guide will show you around and teach you how to caress the giant tortoises to stand up for you. They enjoy human massage. These giant land tortoises were imported from Seychelles in the 19th Century. Most tortoises have their age written on their shield and the oldest one is 193 years old. Let’s see if you can spot him.
Our guide will show you around the former prison and tell you about the sultans who built it. Changuu Island, is the official name, was used as a penitentiary for rebel slaves by the sultans from the 1860s until the end of the slave trade. The British built the actual prison buildings under the guidance of First Governor, Lloyd Matthews. This was completed in 1894. However, the ‘prison’ was only ever used as a quarantine center for possible yellow-fever victims.
Nowadays the island gives you the chance to escape for some peace and quiet.
We give you more time to enjoy it. After visiting the prison and the tortoise park, our guide can make a short stroll through the forested interior where you may see a wide variety of birds, colorful peacocks, bats, and beautiful butterflies. Keep your eyes peeled too for the shy and elusive Duikers – an unusual tiny antelope species.
Or we give you one hour to enjoy the beautiful beach. Don’t forget your snorkeling gear to check the nearby Coral reef.
On-demand we can provide you with a set for a small price. (rented out on the Island).
